Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in fashion merchandising and product development are expected to:

  • Plan textile and apparel product lines to meet target market needs using the product development process.
  • Evaluate apparel industry processes in which products are developed, produced, marketed, sold, and consumed in the global economy.
  • Formulate solutions to apparel and textile global problems as evidence of critical and creative thinking skills.
  • Evaluate issues of personal and social responsibility, professional behavior, and ethics related to the impact of individual, organizational, and corporate decision making.

University Requirements

Designated courses in Humanities and the Arts and the Social and Behavioral Sciences domains may be used to fulfill both the BGP requirement and one of the following university requirements:

Total BGP Credits: Must be at least 36                      

Electives or Minors


Since completion of all FMPD coursework and other requirements may result in fewer than 120 hours required for graduation, meet with your FMPD faculty advisor to find electives or the possibility of choosing a minor.
Suggested minors include:

  • Marketing
  • International Business
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Art
  • Digital Arts
  • Sociology

Students may also choose to complete their requirements by taking FMPD 3090 - F I T Visiting Student   (30 Credits).
Students must be accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) Advertising and Communications (Fall/Spring) and Textile Development and Marketing (Fall).

  • Meet with academic advisors on a regular basis.  Names of Advisors are listed via MyBGSU account.
  • A minimum of 120 total hours is required for a bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of 40 hours of courses at the 3000-4000 level is required for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Courses in this major may NOT be taken on an S/U basis.
