The Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration will prepare students to work in management and administration in hospitals, clinics, and other organizations providing health care services. Their roles include aspects of finance, budgeting, billing, human resources management, facilities managements, marketing, and quality measurement and improvement. In addition, holding a BSHCA will allow students to purse further education at the graduate level.
Several sources of information reported that employment of health care administration professionals is projected to grow steadily over the next 20 years. The increase in need is largely due to the depth of services being sought out and a wider spectrum of medical procedures in a growing amount of health care facilities.
The degree curriculum requires a minimum of 122 semester hours. The curriculum follows Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) baccalaureate certification standards for health care administration programs. The curriculum serves as an outstanding platform to expose students to the concepts necessary for success in the workplace, further education and life-long learning. A required practicum provides students with the opportunity to receive training linked to practice. An important component of health care administration training is the integration of learning with practical experience. The program will provide students with exposure to health professionals and/or institutions that engage in health care administration.
Of the 122 credit hours required to complete, 80-82 are dictated by the major; 45 credits are taken in the Department of Public and Allied Health, and 35-37 are supportive courses taken outside the Department but required by the major. Students accepted into the Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration program will be required to fulfill all BGSU General Education requirements(i.e. BG Perspective requirements which equate to at least 36 credit hours) and related undergraduate graduation requirements.
