Career Tech Workforce Education, Specialization in Business and Marketing Education, BSED

The Career Tech Workforce Education major with a specialization in Business and Marketing Education prepares graduates for Ohio grades 4-12 four-year Resident Educator Career-Technical Integrated Business Licensure and Marketing Licensure. This degree program is designed to be completed in four years; however, changing majors, academic issues, and/or other unforeseen circumstances may require additional semesters for completion.

Minimal qualifications for the BGSU College of Education and Human Development and School of Inclusive Teacher Education for a student to be eligible for Career-Technical Integrated Business Licensure and Marketing Licensure valid for teaching content specialization in grades 4-12 in the State of Ohio include:

  • the successful completion of an appropriate program of study,
  • successful professional disposition reviews,
  • an overall GPA of 3.0, a content GPA of 2.8,
  • and passing scores for all required Ohio Assessments for Educators examinations required by the State of Ohio.

Candidates in this program will also be required to obtain BCI/FBI checks and the Ohio Pre-Service Teacher Permit in order to participate in required field experiences.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in the Career Tech Workforce Education teacher education program are expected to:

  • demonstrate competence of subject matter in the Business and Marketing Education specialization;
  • demonstrate competence in the theories and practices of sound pedagogy;
  • apply theories of human development and learning to plan, implement, and assess daily lessons and units of instruction;
  • exhibit professional and ethical behavior when working with students, their parents/guardians, other educators, and community members.

Additional Policies

  1. Transfer Students must complete 15 semester hours at BGSU prior to program admission.
  2. BCI/FBI background checks must be renewed annually and sent directly to the Office of Education Preparation and Partnerships by July 1.
  3. No courses in “Professional Education” may be taken S/U, and no more than one course in “Content for Teaching Specialty” may be taken S/U.

General Advice for Success

  1. Monitor your GPA and degree plan progression regularly using your degree audit.
  2. Meet with your academic advisor at least once per semester to ensure you are on track.
  3. Read course descriptions on the BG web page under “Academics.” These descriptions list the courses that are prerequisites for subsequent classes, the GPA required, whether the course includes a field experience, etc.
  4. Freshman and Sophomore Years:
    a. Prioritize coursework and studying.
    b. Complete 1000 & 2000-level classes, along with major content courses. These may be prerequisites for other courses you will need.
    c. EDTL 2020 , Educational Psychology is a prerequisite for program admission, EDWF 4670 , and several upper-level classes, as shown in the table.
