The TESOL and Applied Linguistics Minor offers students the opportunity to acquire a foundation for teaching non-native speakers of English or focus on applied linguistics related to their major fields of study. The minor requires 18 hours of coursework, including 12 hours of required courses and 6 hours of electives. No work can be counted both for the major and the minor. Minor courses may not be taken under the S/U grading option or at both graduate or undergraduate levels. A grade of C or better is required in every course used to satisfy the requirements for the minor.
In the TESOL & Applied Linguistics Minor, students take technical and experiential coursework designed to prepare them for careers in teaching English as a second language or for the further study of linguistics:
- Students analyze the structure of English and the other most commonly spoken languages of the world.
- TESOL and Applied Linguistics courses explore the cognitive and cultural use of language including how languages are learned and taught, and how and why they die.
- Students explore how varieties of language reflect social, personal, legal, and political factors by studying bilingualism, dialects, gender and language, and linguistic identity.
- In courses and projects, students explore and practice a variety of second/foreign language teaching approaches, methods, and techniques.
