Associate of Applied Science in Human Services, AASHS

This degree program prepares students for employment as paraprofessionals in social and human service agencies. It also provides a means for those currently employed in these organizations to improve their proficiencies and move toward promotion. The two-year degree program combines academic courses and a supervised field experience, and may be applied toward several baccalaureate programs offered by the College of Health and Human Services.

The human services degree program trains the student to deal with a broad range of human service issues, populations, and agencies.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates from this degree program will possess the following knowledge and skills:

  • Apply appropriate psychosocial concepts to clinical populations, such as those who are at-risk, needy, and/or disadvantaged;
  • Evaluate relevant theory (i.e. case management, interviewing and observation) in human services settings, such as mental health, victim, or employment support agencies;
  • Demonstrate basic clinical skills in practice, such as providing support, identifying problems, and working with diverse groups.  

General Requirements


Students are responsible for adhering to all college and university requirements and policies as stated in the BGSU Undergraduate Catalog. Prerequisites shown below are for reference only.

BG Perspectives Curriculum


Each student must complete five courses, including: BIOL 1040 , PHIL 1020 , PSYC 1010 , and an additional Humanities and Arts (H or HI) and an additional Natural Science. Please refer to the BG Perspective curriculum  listed in the BGSU Undergraduate Catalog

Professional Electives


Select four courses: Any CRJU or GERO course, or any PSYC or SOC course not already specified. Please consult with advisor.

Note:


Each student must complete a sufficient number of electives to earn a minimum of 62 semester hours. At least 15 hours must be completed at BGSU. Please check with your advisor for appropriate course selections.

Students who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree should complete coursework that meets the INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE requirement AND coursework that meets the CULTURAL DIVERSITY in the U.S. BG Perspective requirement.
