The jazz studies minor is a supplementary program of courses and performance experiences presenting the historical and stylistic features of jazz. The jazz studies minor may be added to existing undergraduate degree programs in music composition, music education, music history and literature, or music performance. Students interested in the jazz studies minor should consult their department chair and the coordinator of jazz studies for assistance in planning for the additional required coursework. Non-music majors are also eligible for the jazz studies minor. An audition for the jazz faculty is required.
Applied credits earned in any music major program count towards this requirement. A minimum of 15 credit hours must be unique to the jazz studies minor and not applied towards the student’s principle area of study or major.

Required Courses (23 Credits)
Performance/Applied Requirements
Jazz Performance Ensemble Requirements (4 Hrs minimum)
May include any combination of Jazz Lab Bands
Applied Music Study on Major Instrument (8 Hrs)
Usually a minimum of 4 semester hours of applied credit at 2 credit hours per semester.

*Many of these courses are offered only once during the academic year, or in alternate years. Some of the courses have prerequisites. Please consult the University Catalog under College of Musical Arts/Jazz Studies Minor for further information. College advisors should contact the Coordinator of Jazz Studies for specific information concerning course content and/or scheduling.
