Associate of Applied Business in Computer Networking and Cybersecurity, AABCST

The associate of applied business in computer networking and cyber security prepares students for employment in the areas of information technology field dealing with information technology networking and system administration. The primary focus is using industry-recognized standards and practices to identify security vulnerabilities and to secure the information and network from intruders. Students learn to manage and configure computers using various operating systems and also provide critical network services to a diverse population of clients in  a secure manner. 

The program uses a mixture of core software applications, networking classes, and security training that includes extensive hands-on experience in both the classroom and virtual environments. This degree includes extensive coverage of the legal and ethical aspects of the cyber security field. The security concepts are vendor-neutral and apply to all system types. High standards of systems and network security are emphasized throughout the program.

Many of the courses in this degree will also help students prepare for exams from CompTIA, Microsoft, Cisco Systems, and other industry-recognized certifications. These include ITF+, Security+, CCNA, Network+, CYSA+, CEH, and others. 

Increased recognition of the need for secure systems and networks by employers provides increased opportunities for employment in this field. 

Learning Outcomes

Graduates from this program will posses the following knowledge and skills:

  • Implement a hardware and software configuration responsive to an identified scenario;
  • Plan, design, and implement a converged computer network system;
  • Identify and implement a variety of enterprise-level storage technologies;
  • Analyze and resolve security issues in networks and computer systems to secure an IT infrastructure;
  • Develop policies and procedures to manage enterprise security risks;
  • Evaluate and communicate the human role in security systems with an emphasis on ethics, social engineering vulnerabilities, and training;
  • Create and present training materials for users of information technology. 

General Requirements


Students are responsible for adhering to all college and university requirements and policies as stated in the BGSU Undergraduate Catalog. Prerequisites shown below are for reference only. 

BG Perspectives Curriculum


Each student must complete one Natural Science (N) elective. Three courses in general studies coursework must be completed. Choices should be made from the list of approved courses in the BG Perspective (General Education Core) Curriculum listed in the BGSU Undergraduate Catalog available at www.bgsu.edu/catalog.html

Note:


Each student must complete a sufficient number of electives to earn a minimum of 62 semester hours. At least 15 credit hours must be BGSU courses. Please check with your advisor for appropriate course selections.

Courses with the prefixes of CST and BAT WILL NOT meet the requirements for the degree programs in the Computer Science Department of the College of Arts and Sciences
