The minor in child development is designed to support students who are pursuing a career focusing on children in informal education and community-based settings. Students will gain a deeper understanding of child development in the context of a family-centric approach. Specific aims of the minor are to educate students in child development theory and practice, child development principles, and creative play activities and settings.

HDFS 2210 - Child Development
HDFS 2300 - Creative Learning Environments
HDFS 4220 - Cognitive Development of the Young Child *
HDFS 4230 - Organization of Programs for Young Children *

Choose two courses from the following:

HDFS 2200 - Infant and Toddler Development
HDFS 2280 - Preadolescent and Adolescent in Family and Community
PEHE 2410 - Educational Games Teaching to Children
HDFS 3001 - Inclusive, Trauma-Informed Listening
HDFS 4150 - Therapeutic Play
HDFS 4200 - Nurturing Positive Behavior

Note:

*Prerequisite of HDFS 2200 or HDFS 2210 required.

If you are a Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) major, you must complete 15 hours not required for HDFS major.
