The master’s program is named Kinesiology to emphasize a broad base study of human movement. The core of courses in Kinesiology is flexible in order to accommodate a variety of student’s interests and needs. Students may also take advantage of the program’s flexibility to create a more eclectic program that samples systematically from the rich variety of courses available for graduate study. All students in Kinesiology complete either a project, thesis, or comprehensive exam.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Master’s degree, students in the HMSLS program are expected to be able to:
- Interpret, synthesize, and evaluate the literature appropriate to her/his area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Integrate learning from courses taken in his/her area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Write clearly, demonstrating grammatical precision and avoiding unnecessary jargon related to his/her area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills encompassing different perspectives in his/her area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Demonstrate competence in those skills required of his/her area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Demonstrate leadership capacity appropriate to his/her area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to interact with a diverse, multicultural, and global society.
Admission Requirements
Deadlines: Fall February 1 recommended for funding.
GPA of 3.0 or higher is required for admission. Application deadline for funding is February 1 for Fall Semester. Applications received after the deadline will be reviewed, however those received by the deadline will receive priority consideration for funding. Since application reviews may begin immediately after the deadline, we recommend submitting your application and providing all required documents before the deadline.

**International applicants are required to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTEA). Successful completion of ELS 112 will also be accepted for this requirement.
Additionally, Duolingo test scores will be accepted for applications through Summer 2025. Applicants of the Graduate College who have completed a previous degree (associate, bachelor’s master’s or doctorate) from a U.S. college/university or are from a country (click here for a complete list) in which instruction was delivered in English (and attended the university for at least two years) are exempt from providing these test scores.
