The Master of Education in Reading Program includes the 5 courses required for the Ohio K-12 Reading Endorsement followed by 7 additional courses to prepare educators to be literacy leaders. This program provides theoretical and practical experiences necessary to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed for employment as a reading specialist and/or literacy coach. The program prepares teachers to provide evidence-based, specialized reading and writing instruction, to assess and diagnose literacy behavior, and to serve as a resource to other educators across K-12 settings. Students complete Plan II (non-thesis option). 

Information regarding Licensure, Endorsement, or Accreditation: Applicants to the M.Ed. Reading Program should have a teaching certificate/license and teaching experience at the early childhood, middle childhood, or adolescent/young adult level. The M.Ed. in Reading Program is structured in accordance with the licensing requirements established by the Ohio Department of Education Ohio Board of Higher Education and the International Literacy Association.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the master’s degree, students in the Reading program are expected to be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following domains through requirements such as: 

  • Foundational Knowledge 
    • Demonstrate knowledge of reading on the State Required Content Knowledge Exam, OAE 038/039.  
    • Synthesize foundational and current research about essential components of literacy in professional writing.  
  • Curriculum and Instruction 
    • Select, adapt, and teach evidence-based interventions aligned with the Science of Reading. 
    • Design a multimodal (potentially interdisciplinary) unit that operationalizes literacy in authentic, relevant ways. 
  • Assessment and Evaluation 
    • Evaluate and administer informal and formal literacy assessments. 
    • Construct case reports and communicate findings with students’ families, teachers, and administrators 
  • Diversity and Equity 
    • Apply theoretical knowledge to create learning experiences that are culturally responsive and link school, home, and community literacy knowledge. 
    • Advocate for literacy practices and policies to support all learners, including advocating for change in practices and structures that are inherently biased. 
  • Learners and the Literacy Environment 
    • Develop research-based recommendations to support a student’s literacy development across home and school contexts. 
    • Design a literacy-rich learning environment that incorporates digital and print materials, integrates appropriate and relevant technologies, and engages all students. 
  • Professional Learning and Leadership 
    • Use school data to identify needs; create and deliver a relevant professional development session. 
    • Conduct an instructional coaching conference; identify next steps for both coach and teacher.

You have selected a degree program that includes coursework for an associated certificate: Reading Endorsement - Certificate. If you would also like to receive the certificate on your transcript, select “Yes” above to have this certificate application added to your account within 24 hours.

By completing this MEd, you will earn the Master’s degree in Reading and complete the coursework required to apply for the ODE Reading Endorsement. You also earn the BGSU Reading Endorsement Certificate and this will post to your BGSU transcript showing that you have completed 15 hours (5 courses) of reading graduate credit hours.  After completing this coursework, you will need to take the OAE 038 and OAE 039 test to add the endorsement to your license. Note: Students who earned an Alternative License cannot add the Reading Endorsement to their license until they convert their alternative license to the 5-year professional license.

Additional Documents required:
Submit scores from the appropriate PRAXIS II, or Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) or edTPA test. Your test score will be waived if you have an earned Master’s degree. Acceptable Praxis II and OAE scores include:

  • Minimum 3.0 graduate cumulative grade point average
  • Minimum of 18 credits must be at the 6000-level or higher
  • Minimum of  24 credits must be earned at BGSU
  • All requirements must be completed within six years from the end of the earliest course used to fulfill degree requirements.
