The Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program offers a cutting-edge curriculum designed to enhance clinical decision-making. In this program you will gain expertise in evidence-based practice to improve patient care and clinical outcomes. Throughout the program you will work with healthcare clinicians in interprofessional settings to expand your clinical knowledge and skills. Our program develops clinical and academic leaders who will advance the athletic training profession and serve as skilled clinicians with requisite knowledge in implementing clinical decisions that improves the delivery of athletic healthcare locally and globally.
Information regarding Licensure, Endorsement, or Accreditation: The Master of Athletic Training Program is seeking accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Master’s degree, students in the Athletic Training program are expected to be able to:
- Collaborate in inter-professional practice with a variety of global healthcare professionals.
- Integrate research and standards of evidence based practice and quality improvement in clinical decision making.
- Develop a patient centered plan of care that emphasizes appropriate diagnosis, management, and treatment of injuries and illnesses in an active population.
- Provide AT services to medically underserved and diverse populations.
- Foster effective communication with and between patients, administrators and other healthcare professionals utilizing healthcare informatics.
- Demonstrate ethical, moral, and legal behaviors of athletic training clinical practice.
- Distinguish the profession of athletic training within the broader climate of healthcare.
Admission Requirements

- Full time program only.
- Two Letters of Recommendation
- Writing Sample - Describe your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of an athletic trainer within the allied healthcare setting and within the directions and trends of the profession
- Formal Interview (will be scheduled after all admission materials are received)
- Must meet Athletic Training Technical Standards
- Evidence of 40 hours of observation under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer
Completion of prerequisite coursework as follows:
- Anatomy (4 credits with lab. When anatomy and physiology are taken as a combined course, two semesters are necessary to meet this requirement)
- Physiology (4 credits with lab. When anatomy and physiology are taken as a combined course, two semesters are necessary to meet this requirement)
- Chemistry (3-4 credits with lab)
- Biology (3-4 credits with lab)
- Physics (3-4 credits with lab)
- Psychology (3 credits)
- Nutrition (3 credits)
- Exercise Physiology (3 credits)
- Biomechanics* (3 credits)
NOTE: Students may have prerequisite courses still in progress at the time they apply. All prerequisites must be completed by the start of the program. All prerequisite coursework must be taken for a letter grade and be counted toward academic GPA (i.e. students may not take prerequisite coursework pass/fail).

- Up-to-date immunizations (HBV, MMR, TDAP, Menigitis, Varicella)
- Negative TB testing
- BCI background check
- Current emergency cardiac care certification
