Mathematics, Specialization in Mathematics, M.A.

The Master of Arts program can prepare the student for direct entry into careers in business, industry, government, and education, or for study toward a Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or operations research. Areas of specialization in the M.A. program are pure mathematics, statistics, and applied mathematics / scientific computation. The pure mathematics specialization is designed for students interested in obtaining a broad background in pure mathematics or in pursuing a Ph.D. degree in mathematics. The statistics specialization is designed for students interested in theory and applications of statistics and also for those planning to pursue a doctoral degree in statistics. The applied mathematics / scientific computation specialization is designed for students interested in applications of mathematics in science and industry, in particular using differential equations.  

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Master’s degree, students in the Mathematics program (including Applied Math and Statistics specializations) are expected to be able to:

  • Effectively explain, integrate, and apply critical concepts in mathematics/statistics
  • Demonstrate proficiency at mathematical/statistical problem solving in novel situations
  • Use appropriate technology to successfully make progress on a wide variety of mathematical/statistical tasks
  • Clearly communicate mathematical/statistical ideas orally and in writing   

Admission Requirements

Deadlines: Summer and Fall, Jan 31 recommended for funding. 
Additional Documents:

  • Submit scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Your GRE will be waived if you:
    • hold a US undergraduate degree with a GPA of 3.4 or better on a 4.0 scale. Enter your undergraduate GPA and GPA Scale on the Academic History tab with your undergraduate degree information
    • or if you hold a First Class Honors degree designation in a British school system, please email your Student Services Counselor and let them know you are eligible for the GRE waiver
  • Three Letters of Recommendation from faculty or professionals who can assess your academic preparation for the program
  • Statement of Purpose

Additional Requirements


  • Minimum of 3 credits of 6990 required for Plan I master’s students.  Maximum of 6 credits may be applied toward degree requirements. 
  • Minimum 3.0 graduate cumulative grade point average
  • Minimum of 18 credits must be at the 6000-level or higher
  • Minimum of  24 credits must be earned at BGSU
  • All requirements must be completed within six years from the end of the earliest course used to fulfill degree requirements.
