MACIE, the Master of Arts in Cross-Cultural and International Education is an academic, research-oriented graduate program in the School of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Policy (EFLP) at Bowling Green State University.

The MACIE program offers students rigorous coursework with opportunities for collaborative, community service. We prepare our graduates to be effective leaders in cross-cultural and international education arenas. With a core curriculum in educational foundations, research methods, and a minor outside of Education, our students examine education issues from diverse perspectives in international, transnational, and global contexts.

The program connects cultural and international understanding with educational theory and practice through a unique combination of courses from several disciplines at BGSU. Students construct the academic basis for their program from select courses in the College of Education and Human Development and other colleges on campus. The students then apply this academic foundation to a practical cross-cultural/ international internship experience. Students have participated in a variety of internships in formal and non-formal settings, including international sites in China, South Africa, Vietnam, Chile, Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Belize, and domestically with Yup’ik students in Alaska, refugee organizations in Colorado, Washington and Texas, and Mexican migrant populations in Ohio, Michigan Washington and other states. Students complete the MACIE program with comprehensive examinations, applied project, or a master’s thesis.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Master’s degree, students in the Cross-Cultural and International Education program are expected to be able to:

Demonstrate the skills necessary for international/cross-cultural educational research.
Relate academic learning to authentic problems and apply conceptually based models to real-life settings and challenges
Research and analyze issues of cultural and international understanding with educational theory and practice in local, national or international settings
Construct conceptual models of the relationship between education and global challenges/problems

Admission Requirements

Deadline for funding consideration for Fall is February 15. Application deadline for Spring is November 15. Since application reviews may begin immediately after the deadline, we highly recommend submitting your application and providing all required documents before the deadline. Applications submitted after the deadline may be considered; however, chances for securing scholarship and/or graduate assistantships are greatly diminished.

Internship

EDFI 6890 - Internship in Cross-Cultural Education (minimum 3 credits)

Language acquisition component. Choose option A, B, or C.

Option A: Enroll in 4-6 credit hours of a foreign language. Select from:
Option B: Enter with a prerequisite of at least 2 semesters of a foreign language at the college level (FREN, GERM, SPAN)
Option C: Demonstrate proficiency through a foreign language exam.

Culminating Experience (0-3 credit)

Additional Requirements

Minimum of 3 credits of 6990 required for Plan I master’s students. Maximum of 6 credits may be applied toward degree requirements.

Minimum of 18 credits must be at the 6000-level or higher
Minimum of 24 credits must be earned at BGSU
All requirements must be completed within six years from the end of the earliest course used to fulfill degree requirements.
