Reading Endorsement, Certificate

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Graduate Programs

The Reading Endorsement Certificate program prepares educators for the Ohio K-12 Reading Endorsement. The sequence of 5 courses provides theoretical and practical knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to provide evidence-based reading instruction and intervention. Following completion of the 5 required courses, the courses may be applied to the M.Ed. degree in reading if the student has obtained regular admission to the Graduate College. By completing this certificate, you will complete the coursework required to apply for the ODE Reading Endorsement. You also earn the BGSU Reading Endorsement Certificate and this will post to your BGSU transcript showing that you have completed 15 hours (5 courses) of reading graduate credit hours. After completing this coursework, you will need to take the OAE 038 and OAE 039 test to add the endorsement to your license. For additional information, go to Reading (Subtests I & II) (038/039) - Ohio Assessments for Educator. Please contact Dr. John Sorg for teaching licensure questions at jsorg@bgsu.edu. Note: Students who earned an Alternative License cannot add the Reading Endorsement to their license until they convert their alternative license to the 5-year professional license.

Information regarding Licensure, Endorsement, or Accreditation: The Ohio Board of Higher Education mandates that candidates for the Reading Endorsement meet the following program prerequisites: (a) current educator license, (b) completed Baccalaureate degree, and (c) completion of 9-12 prerequisite hours of reading coursework contingent on teaching license currently held by the applicant.
