Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in Environmental Science are expected to:
- Understand basic characteristics of ecosystems and environmental problems and be able to identify, investigate, and propose solutions to environmental issues as informed by an interdisciplinary background in the natural sciences;
- Understand the interrelationships between environmental problems and human societies and cultures;
- Engage in rational, civil discourse about complex environmental issues in a manner that considers all viewpoints;
- Participate in practical, experience-based learning through internships, field experiences, workshops, and independent research projects;
- Communicate effectively in written and oral forms;
- Gain facility with technologies and tools used in environmental analysis, such as geographic information systems, global positioning systems, statistical analysis, and remotely sensed images.
This interdisciplinary major emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of environmental issues and the role of the natural sciences in addressing and solving environmental problems. Students receive a basic understanding of the sciences, particularly biology and geology. Additional courses in the social sciences and humanities are included to help the student obtain a holistic view and understanding of the overall context in which environmental issues are placed. Each student also takes courses in a specialization designed to prepare for a career field. A 3-hour internship or independent study (ENVS 4890 or ENVS 4700 ) is required. Close consultation with advisors in the Department of the Environment and Sustainability is essential.

(18-23 Credits) For Graduation You Will Need:
- 122 credit hours minimum.
- Minimum GPA 2.00.
- At least 30 credit hours of BGSU course work.
- 40 credit hours at the 3000/4000 level.
- Completion of all degree requirements, including the BG Perspective Core.
- A major, and if required, a minor, specialization or emphasis.
Any substitution or waiver of courses required for your major or minor program must originate in the department/school offering the major or minor and must be approved by the College Office. To ensure a timely graduation, see a College Advisor during the semester prior to your intended graduation. Remember to complete an Application for Graduation by the end of the second week of classes during the fall semester or spring regular session, or by the end of the first week of the summer semester. For the specific dates, check your DARS. You may log onto MyBGSU to complete the online application. After the deadlines, you will need to complete an application in person in the College Office. |
