Digital Arts, BFA

The Digital Arts division in the School of Art offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Digital Arts with specializations in several possible areas of focus. Students choosing the Digital Arts major can choose to focus on one or more of the following tracks, selecting the courses that best fit their academic goals. The Digital Arts Division offers coursework in 3D modeling and animation, video art, imaging and interactive media.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree in Digital Arts, students are expected to:

  • Approach digital art as a studio art discipline, within a broader understanding of popular culture and new media arts;
  • Develop the problem solving skills to succeed and move forward in a constantly evolving field;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the history of new media and how to contextualize their practice within that field;
  • Demonstrate the ability to independently and pro-actively research and problem solve;
  • Through the senior capstone experience, demonstrate the ability to apply scholarly and/or creative research in visual, written, and oral context;
  • Create a body of work that shows their technical, artistic, and conceptual skills and is competitive with their peers in digital arts;
  • Develop the work ethic, creativity, curiosity, collaborative spirit, and critical self-reflection necessary for ongoing growth in a constantly evolving field of digital arts.

Multidisciplinary Component

Courses applied to the Arts & Sciences MDC may not be used to fulfill other Arts and Sciences degree requirements, nor may they be used to fulfill major, minor, BGP or other program requirements.

Required Digital Arts Studio Area


(8 Courses)

  • Choose any ARTC 3000- or 4000-level courses except for ARTC 4090 , ARTC 4180 , ARTC 4190 , ARTC 4890 .
  • ARTS 2410 , ARTS 3460, and ARTS 4360  can apply to the Required Digital Arts Studio Area.
  • If not applied to the Computer Programming Requirement, ARTC 3010  can fulfill the Required Digital Arts Studio Area.

(*Two courses must be at the 3000 or 4000 level; may include ARTC 4890  Practicum up to six hours)

Art History


(4 Courses)

Choose Any Two Upper Level Courses:


  • ARTH 3
  • ARTH 3 or 4

Additional ART, ARTC, ARTD, ARTE, ARTH, ARTS courses to reach a minimum of 73 credit hours in major requirements.


Computer Programming Requirement


(1 Course)

ARTC 3010  may not count under this requirement if applied to the Required Digital Arts Studio Area.

For Graduation You Will Need:


  1. 122 credit hours minimum.
  2. Minimum GPA 2.00.
  3. At least 30 credit hours of BGSU course work.
  4. 40 credit hours at the 3000/4000 level.
  5. Completion of all degree requirements, including the BG Perspective Core.
  6. A major, and if required, a minor, specialization or emphasis.

Any substitution or waiver of courses required for your major or minor program must originate in the department/school offering the major or minor and must be approved by the College Office.

To ensure a timely graduation, see a College Advisor during the semester prior to your intended graduation.

Remember to complete an Application for Graduation by the end of the second week of classes during the fall semester or spring regular session, or by the end of the first week of the summer semester. For the specific dates, check your DARS. You may log onto MyBGSU to complete the online application. After the deadlines, you will need to complete an application in person in the College Office.
