International Studies, B.A.

The International Studies major provides an interdisciplinary approach to international and global connections. The major acquaints students with approaches from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The student’s individual program may focus on a world region, a particular issue or discipline, or a future career goal such as government, business, or foreign service. All IS majors continue foreign language at least through the third-year college level. A study abroad experience of at least 3 hrs and at least 4 weeks duration is required.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in International Studies are expected to:

  • Understand the connections between countries;
  • Describe the impact of international events or arrangements at the regional, national, and local levels in at least one major area of the world;
  • Articulate how historical processes, such as colonialism, post-colonialism, and globalization, have led to our current situation in general, and to specific conditions in at least one area of the world;
  • Analyze and describe global issues both qualitatively and quantitatively, using approaches from both the humanities and the social sciences;
  • Demonstrate a basic command of at least two appropriate disciplinary approaches, such as economics, sociology (demographics), political science, history, literature, popular culture, environmental studies, cultural studies, or regional studies;
  • Apply interdisciplinary approaches, including foreign language skills and international experience, to research and present specific global issues.

Multidisciplinary Component

Select from approved offerings, in consultation with an advisor and a faculty mentor. Four courses total, each with a different subject prefix. At least two courses at 3000/4000 level. Courses applied to the Arts & Sciences MDC may not be used to fulfill other Arts and Sciences degree requirements, nor may they be used to fulfill major, minor, BGP or other program requirements.

Foreign Language


(0-6 Hours)

  • Demonstrated proficiency at the intermediate high level (OPI)
    or
  • 2 courses at the 3000-level in a foreign language
    or
  • Major/Minor in a foreign language

Education Abroad


(Minimum of 3 Hours)

To be earned through an education abroad program of at least 4 weeks duration. A full year or semester program is strongly recommended.

Total Hours: 36-45


Minor Requirements


(Usually 18-21 Hours)

For Graduation You Will Need:


  • 122 credit hours minimum.
  • Minimum GPA 2.00.
  • At least 30 credit hours of BGSU course work.
  • 40 credit hours at the 3000/4000 level.
  • Completion of all degree requirements, including the BG Perspective Core.
  • A major, and if required, a minor, specialization or emphasis.

Any substitution or waiver of courses required for your major or minor program must originate in the department/school offering the major or minor and must be approved by the College Office.

To ensure a timely graduation, see a College Advisor during the semester prior to your intended graduation.

Remember to complete an Application for Graduation by the end of the second week of classes during the fall semester or spring regular session, or by the end of the first week of the summer semester. For the specific dates, check your DARS. You may log onto MyBGSU to complete the online application. After the deadlines, you will need to complete an application in person in the College Office.
