Career Tech Workforce Education, Specialization in Family and Consumer Sciences Education, BSED

A graduate completing a Career Tech Workforce Education major is eligible for a career-technical teaching license providing that he or she has met all program requirements, has successfully completed the state-required assessments, and meets all license requirements. 

Students must complete one of the following two specializations:

Business and Marketing Education (leads to integrated business and marketing licensure) or
Family and Consumer Sciences Education (leads to family and consumer sciences education licensure)

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in Career Tech Workforce Education are expected to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of student learning and development and diversity of students;
  • Apply skills in planning and delivering effective instruction, assessing students, creating learning environments, and collaborating and communicating with students, their parents, other educators, administrators and the community to support student learning;
  • Demonstrate understanding of the importance of assuming responsibility for professional growth, performance and involvement as individuals and as members of a learning community;
  • Demonstrate understanding of content for which they will have instructional responsibility as a teacher.

Bachelor of Science in Education; Leads to Family and Consumer Sciences licensure in grades 4 and beyond. This degree program is designed to be completed in 4 years. Changing majors, academic issues or other unforeseen circumstances may require additional semesters for completion.

Note:

Important Checklists

  1. Application for the Methods Block and Student Teaching is made at a sign up meeting held the Fall of the junior year. The Methods Block is offered Fall semester only and Student Teaching is offered Spring semester only.
  2. Methods Admission Requirements
    Attainment of 60 semester hours
  3. Prerequisites for Student Teaching (EDWF 4960 - Advanced Seminar in Career Tech Workforce Education  and EDTL 4970 )
    • Completion of 90 semester hours
    • Accumulative GPA of at least 2.5
    • Completion of the following courses with a grade of “C” or better:

Reminders

  1. HDFS 2020  is a required course and can be used as a social and behavioral science elective.
  2. FN 2070  is a required course and can be used as a natural science.
  3. Meet with your advisor at least once each year. The name of your advisor appears in the MyBGSU web page, click on “My Advisor”
  4. SENIOR YEAR: You must apply for graduation online prior to the term deadline; complete applications for licensure during your student teaching semester (you will receive instructions for doing so during a required meeting that precedes student teaching).
  5. Eligibility for Professional Year Internship: A passing score on all required Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) as determined each year by the Department of Education is required to be eligible for the Professional Year Internship (student teaching). (Note: OAE test requirements are subject to change, so continue to check with your program and the Ohio Department of Education for updates).
  6. Complete at least 30 hours of coursework at BGSU.

NOTE: Undergraduate students and degree holders seeking licensure must meet all specified requirements, including successful completion of all state required assessments to qualify for the Family and Consumer Sciences licensure.
