Applied Health Science, Specialization in Health Science, BAHS


The applied health science degree is designed to prepare graduates for work in a health-related field and for further education and training at the post-baccalaureate level. The AHS degree consists of six separate specializations which have common BG Perspective, core, and supportive requirements but differing specialization courses. The diversified curriculum provides a strong background in the basic sciences and emphasizes the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Health Science specialization
The health science specialization is designed to prepare students for entry into post-baccalaureate programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, public health, occupational and environmental health, and a variety of other options, including medical school.

Learning Outcomes for Health Science and Pre-pharmacy

Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students are expected to:

  • Master fundamental principles of natural science, social science and mathematics, read the scientific literature, and critically evaluate research findings;
  • Use reference materials, empirical methods, and statistical and computing skills to solve occupational problems, detect/resolve problems and errors, and develop/test/validate new models;
  • Abide by laboratory safety rules, policies, and regulations, recognizing any unsafe conditions and correcting them;
  • Instruct others in occupational and/or health and wellness practices and procedures;
  • Make decisions based upon ethical principles.

Designated courses in Humanities and the Arts and the Social and Behavioral Sciences domains may be used to fulfill both the BGP requirement and one of the following university requirements:

Based upon an average 15 credit hour semester, students entering the major as freshman are expected to complete the degree requirements in 8 semesters. Students transferring to the university or major may require additional time depending upon transfer credit awarded.

In order to complete the required 122 total hours toward graduation, please refer below.

While the course listed below are not required for the AHS degree, they may be required for admission to post bacalaureate programs such as medical, dental, veterinary, podiatric, and chiropractic schools, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and physican assistant.

Minor Requirements


NOTE: Credit hours completed to fulfill minor requirements may not be used to satisfy core/supportive credit hour requirements. For example: if PUBH 3300  was chosen to fulfill the AHS core requirement, PUBH 3300  credit hours could not be counted toward the Public Health Minor.

Note on minors: refer to the undergraduate catalog for accurate and current information on minor requirements. Double counting may be permitted for some courses as long as there are 15 hours of minor not also counting in the major.
