Associate of Science, A.S.

The Associate of Science degree prepares students for BGSU baccalaureate degrees as well as providing the foundation for many pre-professional opportunities at BGSU Firelands. 

General Requirements

  • Communication (1 course minimum)-Each student is required to acquire proficiency in written expression. WRIT 1120 is required. Based on English placement tests, WRIT 1010 or WRIT 1110 may also be required. Each student should also acquire proficiency in oral communication; a COMM or other oral communication course is strongly recommended.
  • Mathematics and science (3 courses minimum)-Two courses must be selected from the BG Perspective natural science domain. One lab science course is required. One course must be a Quantitative Literacy (QL) course.
  • Social sciences (2 courses minimum)-Two courses must be selected from the BG Perspective social and behavioral science domain.
  • Humanities and arts (2 courses minimum)-Two courses must be selected from the BG Perspective humanities and arts domain.
  • Cultural Diversity (1course minimum)-One course must be selected from the BG Perspective humanities and arts domain.
  • International Perspective (1course minimum)-One course must be selected from the BG Perspective humanities and arts domain.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate information critically across academic disciplines.
  2. Analyze physical, biological and social environments.
  3. Interpret mathematical and/or statistical models such as formulas, graphs, and tables, and draw references from them.
  4. Analyze diversity, historical viewpoints, and a global perspective.
  5. Demonstrate proficiency in written communication.
  6. Evaluate the role of humanities in culture and society.

The Associate of Science degree requires 36 hours of Bowling Green Perspectives coursework. Each student must select a sufficient number of approved electives to earn a minimum number of credit hours consistent with the university minimum. A student planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the College of Arts and Sciences should take a foreign language.

Students may not earn both the associate of science and the associate of arts degrees without taking a substantially different set of courses.

Communication

WRIT 1120 is required. Based on placement scores, WRIT 1010 or WRIT 1110 may also be required. A COMM or other oral communication course is strongly recommended.

Note:

The Associate of Science degree requires 36 hours of Bowling Green Perspectives coursework. Each student must complete a sufficient number of electives to earn a minimum number of credit hours consistent with the university minimum. At least 15 credit hours must be BGSU courses. Please check with your advisor for appropriate course selections.

^ It is strongly recommended that each student take a COMM or other oral communication course.  For students who place directly into WRIT 1120, COMM 1020 can count as the additional hours of English Composition.  For students who take WRIT 1010 or 1110 and 1120, COMM 1020 can be taken as an elective.

^^ International Perspective can be satisfied by SI, HI, or Academic Study Abroad of at least three credit hours.
