Assistive Technology, Certificate (online)

The focus of this certificate program is on developing a knowledge base for working with Individuals with assistive technology needs, to help such individuals increase, maintain, or improve their functional abilities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the certificate, students in the Assistive Technology (AT) program are expected to be able to:

  1. Describe the philosophical, historical, and legal foundation of special education including the scope of the definition for assistive technology devices and services and the legal definitions of assistive technology devices and services as defined in the 1988 Technology Related Assistance for individuals with Disabilities (Tech Act) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  2. Describe and apply understanding of characteristics of learners including identifying specific AT tools as defined by the features that apply to an individual’s abilities and needs
  3. Describe and apply understanding of issues related to AT assessment, diagnosis, and evaluation including various assessment models and tools used in team decision making
  4. Describe and evaluate ways in which AT can assist with planning and managing the teaching and learning environment
  5. Use assessment information in making instructional decisions and planning individual programs that result in appropriate placement and intervention for all individuals with exceptional learning needs, including those from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds
  6. Identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability
  7. Choose and use appropriate technologies to accomplish instructional objectives and to integrate them appropriately into the instructional process
  8. Design a learning environment that provides for optimal learning and encourages active participation by learners in a variety of individual and group activities
