ENG 1001 - Introduction to English Studies

Description: This course introduces students to English Studies as a discipline. While the course emphasizes the interpretation of literary and cultural texts, consideration will be given to the distinction among major fields of study including literature and writing (creative, professional, and rhetoric/composition), the major issues in English education, and the future of English studies. Students explore the different fields of English studies and examine critically the chief conventions, methodologies, assumptions, and concerns relevant to the discipline. The course provides students with a context for the English courses they have taken and/or will take throughout their undergraduate studies.
