ENG 4170 - Romantic and Victorian Literature and Culture

Description: This course focuses on literary developments in 19th-century Britain from the period following the French Revolution through the end of the reign of Queen Victoria. In-depth exploration of significant movements and genres such as Romanticism, the Victorian novel, Aestheticism/Decadence, and/or others. Major and lesser known literary texts are explored in the context of cultural and historical trends such as the growth of empire and travel, the rise of industrialization, urbanization and capitalism, and shifting constructs of gender and sexuality. Topics may vary and the course may be repeated twice (6 credit hours). 

Prerequisite(s): One of the English Studies in Historical Context survey classes: ENG 2610 , ENG 2620 , ENG 2640 , ENG 2650 , ENG 2110 , ENG 2120 , ENG 2740 ,  or ENG 2750
