POLS 5510 - Human Rights

Fall, Spring. This course examines theory and practice of human rights in international politics. The first half of the course will discuss the origins of the idea of human rights, philosophical approaches to the concept, the current system of international human rights treaties, the role of international institutions and NGOs as enforcers, and applications of the concept of human rights in development and conflict resolution. The second half of the course will examine a number of case studies based on classic problems in the theory and application of human rights, as well as current issues and dilemmas in the field.
